In science in the past weeks we have been working on two things: our science finals and our chairs. our chairs we measured out, and cut them.  It kinda looks like this Image result for two piece wooden chairs

Our science final isn’t really a written test like other schools. We are supposed to take pictures of us doing things. And then we write about what we are doing, like biomes, blood, diseases, drugs, electricity, etc… And it is really fun, and we talk about these topics deeply. And my science teacher checks our research about these topics, and in this way it is like a test.

So any ways it was really fun.

This week Sophia, Mollie, and I finished our roller coaster.   We had to label all of the motions (they are the orange squares). We also decorated the roller coaster with things. It has Dragons, fire, more fire, conspiracy theory decor, office supplies, and various Nemo characters. The main excitement about this roller coaster is the loop, the turn, and the hill. It was really fun.

Here is a picture of our roller coaster.

In class we are making roller coasters! Not real ones, but we are making ones that make a marble roll. We are learning about Physics, and these roller coasters are to represent energy. There are different loops and tuns that create force. and lots of things play into the ball moving like gravity and friction etc. We are learning about how energy changes and how it can be transferred, the roller coaster helps to represent this. Here is a picture of what the idea of what we are building.  (Ours is way more complicated.)Image result for science class roller coaster

Science Expo

For the science expo all students 5th and older made projects for science. The 5th graders made mouse trap cars that rolled across the gym. The 6th graders dressed up as a scientist in a wax museum and talked about their scientist. The 7th graders made posters about a project that they wanted to explore. And the 8th graders made hovercrafts for people to ride on. Even though I was sick on that day, I remember when I was younger the fun times at the Expo.

In science this week we started making our own hovercrafts! I was teamed up with Avery and Alison.

For years the 8th grade has been making hovercrafts for the Pathfinder science Expo, and that is what we are doing. the idea is that we take plastic and we tape  it to the bottom of a sort of light surface. Then we poke holes in the plastic so the air that comes out of the vacuum goes through the holes. And the air pushes the person and the wood up into the air and sort of floats on the floor. One other cool thing is that the hover craft is supposed to work on water, so hopefully we will be able to try it out.

here is a picture of my team building the hovercraft.

This week my team and I made a brain model. We used play dough and water, we put the play dough over a bowl to make it round. It was a lot of fun, and it was really sticky.  We used Knives and other tools to make it, my team was Jasmin, Jadyn, and I.

Here is the paragraph that we made.

The Brain Sculpture Paragraph

The Brain

  • The human brain consume most energy than any other part of the body
  • The human brain about 100 billion neurons.
  • The Cerebrum takes up ⅔ of the brain’s area
  • Neurons multiply much quicker during pregnancy
  • The Cerebrum is where conscious thinking happens, emotions occur, and voluntary movement. Not only that but is where memory is saved.
  • The brain is mostly made of water
  • The Cerebellum is only ⅛ of the Cerebrum. The Cerebellum controls balance, unconscious movement, and coordination.
  • The Brain Stem connects to one’s spinal cord. The Brainstem controls all the necessary actions to stay alive, breathing, blood flow, digestion, and more.
  • The brain is 3 lbs
  • Brain can’t feel pain
  • The brain pumps 750ml of blood from your heart every minute.
  • The human brain works quicker than a computer
  • Babies have big heads to hold rapidly growing brains. A 2-year-old’s brain is 80% of adult size.
  • The brain is 60% fat………………………………..
  • No sleep can result to memory loss.
  • Everyone has dreams. Just because you don’t remember them, you still have them
  • In 2000 B.C.: Archeologists found a primitive skull that had evidence that they did brain surgery by making a hole in the skull and into the brain.
  • We are blind 40 minutes of everyday, when we blink the brain tricks us into thinking “SLEEP!” . that’s why if we blink a lot we get sleepy.
  • There are over 10,000 miles of blood vessels in the brain. (A lot)
  • Your brain stops growing at 18
  • You can’t tickle yourself.
  • Your brain reacts to sadness more than happiness :)))))

The brain is a major part of one’s body, it controls everything; breathing, movement, memory, balance, and much much more. The brain consists of three major sections; Cerebrum, Cerebellum, and Medulla. These three sections each control a major part of everyday life. The Cerebrum takes up ⅔ of the whole brain. The Cerebrum is where conscious thinking, memory, emotions, and voluntary motions happen. Next is the Cerebellum, it takes only ⅛ of the area that the Cerebrum uses. The Cerebellum controls balance, unconscious movement, and coordination. Next comes the Medulla  which is connected to the spinal cord and controls blood flow, breathing, digestion, and more. All the necessities one’s body must perform to survive. Of all the things the brain does, it’s only three pounds, and is 85% water. Although, to do all this the brain consumes more energy than any other part of the body. The brain also has 100 billion neurons, which multiply quicker  when pregnant, and has 10,000 miles of blood vessels.

Here are some interesting facts about the brain. There was a skull found from 2000 B.C. which had proof of brain surgery, it had been performed by drilling a hole through the skull and into the brain. When we blink, it tricks the brain into thinking, sleep. The brain reacts to sadness more than it does to happiness. Sleep deprivation results in memory loss. Also, the brain cannot feel pain.

Today we were finishing up our Drug slideshows, and I decided never to do inhalant drugs. And then it occurred to me how easy it is to acquire inhalant drugs. I mean it is really easy to get a hold of inhalant drugs. Because inhalant drug chemicals can be found in a lot of things, such as: Body spray, glue, sharpies, pray paint, gasoline, hairspray etc.

Here is a picture of some things that can be used as inhalant drugs.

In science we did some brain experiments, and it was really cool. We did things like poke pins in our finders to see if we could tell how many pins were being poked into us. Also we dropped a dollar sideways to see if our brain could keep up with it. And we did lots of things like this. And I joined Sophia and Sophie in doing this, and we all did it together.

Here is a picture of us doing the brain experiments, that is me chillin’ with my foot on the table.

Other than that experiment we didn’t do a whole lot. But Shane brought in this cool white electric ball. And what it did was it lit up when we were all holding hands and completing a circuit. And when we weren’t holding hands it didn’t do anything. And it was pretty cool, but other than that we just did our drug slideshows.

I finally have come back to school on a Monday. And I have finally gotten to catch up on some homework. And we are doing drug reports. We talk about the effects of drugs and what it does. And I chose to do inhalant drugs, and is one of the cheapest forms of drugs. Basically you just need a paper bag and some deodorant spray. And unfortunately it is very common, especially in teens. And that is what I have been researching for the past week.

January 5th

We have finally gotten back from break. And now we are back at school about to start on our work. I can’t wait for the year that is ahead. And this week we didn’t really do much i science. And since i was sick for most of the week i didn’t really know what was happening. So hopefully on Monday i’ll get all of it.
